Senate
The Senate has up to 21 voting members (Section 81 (2) SächsHSFG). It is responsible for academic matters in teaching, studies, continuing education and research that affect the entire university or are of fundamental importance. The Senate of the TUD usually meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

Extended Senate
The Extended Senate is made up of the voting members of the Senate in accordance with Section 81 (2) sentences 1 and 3 SächsHSFG and at least an equal number of elected representatives of the groups in accordance with Section 50 (1) sentence 1 SächsHSFG. It is responsible for the decision on the Fundamental Principles and the election and dismissal of the Rector (§ 81 a Para. 2 SächsHSFG).

The Rector, the Vice-Rectors, the Chancellor, the Deans and the Equal Opportunities Officer of the university are members of the Senate and the Extended Senate in an advisory capacity.

According to Section 13 (1), sentence 7 of the Fundamental Principles of TU Dresden, every member of the Senate can participate in Senate committee meetings without voting rights. Directors appointed by the Chancellor, who may in turn be represented, are members of the commissions in an advisory capacity.
