Prof. Dr. Roberto Calandra hält eine W3-Professor an der Technischen Universität Dresden und am Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI).
Zuletzt gründete er bei Meta AI (ehemals Facebook AI Research) das Robotic Lab in Menlo Park. Davor war er Postdoktorand an der University of California, Berkeley (US) im Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Lab.
Seine Ausbildung umfasst einen Doktortitel der TU Darmstadt (Deutschland), einen M.Sc. in Maschinellem Lernen und Data Mining der Aalto-Universität (Finnland) und einen B.Sc. in Informatik der Università degli studi di Palermo (Italien). Seine wissenschaftlichen Interessen liegen im Wesentlichen im Bereich der Robotik und des maschinellen Lernens mit dem Ziel, Roboter intelligenter und nützlicher für die reale Welt zu machen.
Zu seinen Beiträgen gehört die Entwicklung und Vermarktung von DIGIT - dem ersten kommerziell erhältlichen hochauflösenden kompakten Tastsensor, der in der Robotik am häufigsten eingesetzt wird. Prof. Dr. Calandra war Programmvorsitzender der AISTATS 2020, Gastredakteur der JMLR-Sonderausgabe über Bayes'sche Optimierung und hat bisher über 16 internationale Workshops mitorganisiert (u. a. bei NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ICRA, IROS, RSS).
