Johann Jacobi von Wangelin - Exchange at King's College London
As part of a cooperation between the Chair of Business Administration, in particular Industrial Management, I was able to work with Prof. Dr. Rym M'Hallah for a week at King's College London. The stay served as a scientific exchange for my diploma thesis with the topic "Solution approaches for scheduling in additive manufacturing with decomposition and post-processing".
In the thesis, a planning problem in additive manufacturing is investigated using both an exact and a heuristic method to minimize the cycle time. It was shown that the consideration of upstream and downstream process steps makes the optimization of the cycle time significantly more complex, but at the same time enables better results than a pure optimization of the core process. This is relevant in practice as these additional process steps are often neglected in planning, but require processing time and resources. With the increasing integration of additive manufacturing processes into series processes, production planning must take this into account.
On site, we worked together on the further development of the heuristic solution method and possible extensions. I also presented my results to the PhD students and received valuable feedback. The exchange thus made a significant contribution to the quality of my thesis and at the same time gave me new insights into academic career paths abroad. The stay was made possible by the financial support of the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden and the Chair of Business Administration, in particular Industrial Management, to whom I would like to express my special thanks.
