Doctoral students benefit from a wide range of further training opportunities
During their time at the Boysen-TU Dresden-Research Training Group, doctoral students are motivated to participate in courses within the so-called Educational Concept, such as lectures from another subject area or workshops of the Graduate Academy of TU Dresden. In some cases, workshops are also held by supervisors of the Research Training Group, who pass on their extensive methodological competence and/or their expertise in the preparation of scientific papers, give doctoral students an insight into relevant topics to improve their dissertation and introduce them to good scientific practice.
One of the workshops provided by the Graduate Academy entitled "Text Revision & Peer Feedback" focused on scientific writing and was conducted by Dr. Katharina Ulbrich. It consisted of two parts, with the first part on 24.11.2023 focusing on categorization and the proper organization of the writing process. In the second part on 26.02.2024, the focus shifted to peer feedback and practical advice on how to iteratively improve scientific texts.
Another very valuable workshop on data extraction and evaluation in the social sciences was held by Prof. Hagen, supervisor of the E4 project and co spokesperson for the Research Training Group, on 29.02.2024 ("Survey and evaluation methods - introduction to social science methods", the RTG reported).
Prof. Dijkstra-Silva (supervisor of the F5 project) gave extensive tips on how to efficiently conduct a systematic literature review in her workshop "Systematic Literature Reviews" on March 5, 2024. The content was communicated in advance in the form of a video and then discussed in a lively question-and-answer session.
In his workshop "Publishing in Scientific Journals" on March 14, 2024,Prof. Hirte provided valuable assistance on aspects and considerations that precede a paper publication in scientific journals. The focus of this workshop was on the selection of a suitable scientific journal and practical information on the peer review process. In addition, tips and tools for recognizing "predator journals" were provided as part of a discussion on the value of scientific articles for various scientific disciplines.
The continuous contribution of all supervisors to the development of a competent research atmosphere is highly appreciated by all participants and corresponding further training offers are gratefully accepted. In addition, the interaction of the supervising professors with all fellows ensures an open discussion, supports the deepening of interdisciplinary research and good teamwork.
