P7: Sustainability Assessment of Energy Technologies
The energy technologies that are developed at the Boysen-TU Dresden-Research Training Group will only be successful in the long run if they fulfil the requirements of sustainability. Project 7 investigates energy technologies that are developed by other subprojects with regard to their sustainability. The focus is placed on the assessment of the economic and ecological sustainability dimensions. Furthermore, it is necessary to include the uncertainty that is inherent in long term analyses and to identify trade-offs between the economic and environmental sustainability dimensions. Life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040 and 14044 will be applied in the analysis of the environmental sustainability. The aim is to identify environmental hot spots in the development stage of a technology. This will enable researchers to adapt the respective technology at this early stage so that more sustainable technology options can be developed. Furthermore, potential barriers to the implementation of energy technologies will be analysed. This approach allows for a successful diffusion of the technology options developed at the Boysen-TU Dresden-Research Training Group.
