Pupils gain insight into the world of science
As part of the science project week for the 7th/8th grades of the Martin-Andersen-Nexö-Gymnasium Dresden, we welcomed two students from the 8th grade to our laboratory in the first week of March. Under the supervision of Dr Christiane Kothe and Dipl.-Ing. Daniel Pfarr, the two worked on the topic "Glass construction made easy", which was intended to give them an insight into the scientific work at the institute. Based on the research in the "Glasfur-3D" project, they first worked on the basics of glass as a building material and the advantages of combining this building material with 3D-printed polymer cores.
The students then designed their own flower-like core structure, which was 3D printed afterwards. This was used in a 3-point bending test to compare its strength with core structures already developed in the research project. The students also carried out the practical connection of the core structure with glass independently by bonding both materials using a transparent acrylate.
They summarised their experiments and results in a poster and presented it very successfully at the end of the project week at school. The teachers awarded them the second prize and in addition they received the pupil prize as the best assessed project from the point of view of the seventh grade pupils. Congratulations
