A history of the Faculty of Civil Engineering
At Dresden Technical School, founded in 1828, civil engineering education was a top priority as early as the 1830s. Civil engineering projects, in conjunction with the development of transport links, increasingly determined the teaching programme. In 1875 the Structural Engineering Department was founded to train architects, while future civil engineers continued to study in the Engineering Department.
The first and for many years dominant teacher was Johann Andreas Schubert (1808–1870), who represented mathematical and technical sciences and was increasingly committed to civil engineering tasks. He played an important role as chairman of the commission for the evaluation of the competition designs for the Göltzsch and Elster Viaducts in Vogtland, based on Schubert's own structural calculations.
Subsequently, the profile of civil engineering tuition at TH/TU Dresden was further enhanced by the work of scientists such as
- Claus Koepcke (1831 - 1911), Straßen-, Wasser-, Eisenbahnbau 1869 - 1872
- Otto Mohr (1835 - 1918), Technische Mechanik und Festigkeitslehre 1873 - 1900
- Hubert Engels (1854 - 1945), Wasserbau 1890 - 1924
- Georg Christoph Mehrtens (1843 - 1917), Statik, Brückenbau und Festigkeitslehre 1895 - 1913
- Max Förster (1867 - 1930), Bauingenieurwissenschaften 1900 - 1930
- Willy Gehler (1876 - 1953), Baustoffkunde, Festigkeitslehre, Eisenbrückenbau 1913 - 1945
- Kurt Beyer (1881 - 1952), Technische Mechanik und Festigkeitslehre 1919 - 1952
- Friedrich Wilhelm Neuffer (1882 - 1960), Massiv- und Grundbau 1931 - 1951
- Hans Reingruber (1888 - 1964), Eisenbahn- und Verkehrswesen 1935 - 1957

Currently, civil engineers are trained at eleven institutes in the fields of study "Structural Engineering", "Construction Management", "Urban Engineering and Transportation ", "Hydraulic Engineering and Environment " and "Computational Engineering " by 17 professors and over 100 staff members.
