Professors Ansgar Schulz and Benedikt Schulz win the design competition for the Discovery Centre "Perlmutter" in Adorf / Vogtland. The small Saxon town of Adorf was the center of German mother-of-pearl production until the 1920s. One of the largest mother-of-pearl collections in Germany in the local history and mother-of-pearl museum in Adorf is evidence of this flourishing handicraft tradition. The cramped situation alone limits the possibilities of exhibiting all 1,600 exhibits in the collection and contextualizing them appropriately. With the expansion of the museum to the Discovery Centre "Perlmutter", the central exhibition theme of mother-of-pearl processing is to be expanded to include the areas of habitat and importance of the pearl mussel and pearl fishing. The structural implementation and the renovation of the adjacent half-timbered house in accordance with the requirements of historical monuments are intended to provide important impetus for the revitalization of the inner city and are funded as a National Urban Development Project (NPS) by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI). In the implementation competition for the Discovery Centre "Perlmutter", the work of Prof. Ansgar Schulz and Prof. Benedikt Schulz (Schulz and Schulz) was convincing and was awarded 1st prize by the jury. The award-winning concept “rough shell and precious interior” is derived “from the design motif of the pearl mussel” and impressed the jury with the “high architectural quality of craftsmanship” and “the finely thought-out spatial sequences”, which provided a “spectacular access to the history of Adorf and its mother-of-pearl processing ”( Lux 2020).
