21st Meeting of the Working Committee on Stored Product Protection of the German Phytomedical Society
The 21st Meeting of the Working Committee on Stored Product Protection of the German Phytomedical Society took place on March 29-30, 2022 in Tharandt in collaboration with the Chair of Forest Protection. In his welcome speech Professor Dr. Michael Müller highlighted the fact that especially such an interdisciplinary exchange allows for recognizing and making use of synergies.
The following presentations offered multifaceted information on national and international projects, new research approaches and fascinating technologies. They included reports on pest species on cocoa, the use of artifical intelligence for the identification of insecs in camera traps, the effects of climate change on pest insects of stored products and the protection of the tinder fungus as a renewable primary product for construction industry. Furthermore, Anna Lawall and Elisabeth Spann from the Chair of Forest Protection gave a guest lecture on their studies on the potential of parasitoid hymenopterans for the control of bark beetles.
The meeting was completed with a field trip to the Research and Teaching Enclosure near Grillenburg in the Tharandt Forest, where staff of the Chair of Forest Protection presented their research and developments on innovative traps for weevils and bark beetles, baits for mass trapping and close-to-nature, pesticide-free regulation methods for bark beetle management. Despite the challenging weather the participants engaged in a vidid exchange and discussion of experiences.
