May 1, 2020 was the start of the FLORIAN project, which is part of the THOR joint project “Development, improvement and implementation of preventive and aftercare strategies to protect forests against forest fires as well as target group-specific knowledge transfer for the implementation into practice” in cooperation with Landesforst Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The research within the FLORIAN subproject aims at developing and establishing infrastructural prevention strategies, preventive facilities and educational objects in five German federal states in cooperation with federal forest offices, local fire brigades and associated educational institutions. The seven working tasks of FLORIAN focus on the following topics:
- parameters of forests and the development of forestry roads for forest fire protection and fire fighting
- preventive measures at high risk infrastructure
- protective strips of deciduous trees in high risk forests
- provision of extinguishing agents in the forest
- combination of infrastructural components for preventive forest fire concepts in high risk forests, synopsis of legal basis in this regard
- development and implementation of objects for presentation and education in high risk forests
- compilation of the project results into a “Forest Fire Prevention Compendium”
FLORIAN is funded with 500.000 € for five years by BMEL and BMU based on Waldklimafonds.
