Abstract
This paper develops a concept of an online bicycle route planner based on free data as well as Open Source tools and applications. This is primarily done following a deductive methodology. Based on literature research as well as considerations of suitable Open Source products a theoretical software-hardware architecture was developed and implemented. Moreover, a feasibility analysis was conducted discussing requirements of potential users, financial needs as well as technical feasibility aspects. The implemented system consists of a thin client, an Apache web server, the MapServer common gateway interface and the PostgreSQL database with the extensions PostGIS for spatial data handling and pgRouting carrying out tasks of routing. The application demonstrates that an online bicycle route planner can be build by implementing the current state of technology as well as using free accessible resources.
