Abstract
The aim of this work is a mapping of glaciers around the mountain Gurla Mandhata in south-west Tibet at different points of time, thus achieving a better data basis for forecasting future developments of glaciers in the Himalaya. Therefore analog and multi-temporal image data of the systems Keyhole-7, Landsat-7, SPOT-5, OrbView and Google Earth (Quickbird, Worldview) was compared and evalu-ated using remote sensing methods. The SPOT-5 and in particular KH-7 imagery data was georeferenced and rectified by using image data from Bing and SPOT-5 together with SRTM eleva-tion data as a reference. The mapping was done by manual interpretation of satellite images and the utilisation of a glacier mask as well as a slope map, which was created from the SRTM elevation mod-el. The glacier mask was made out of a ratio image of the Landsat ETM+ sensor with subsequent thresholding. The results showed a decrease in the glacier area, which has declined since 1964 to 2010 by a total of 4 square kilometers (5.3%). Only one glacier has grown considerably, while apart from that a relatively homogeneous, but comparatively slow retreat of the ice masses could be noticed.
