Project Description:
With the goal of nurturing long-lasting international relationships, the DAAD funds Alumni Special Projects for Germany Alumni in developing countries where German universities organise projects for former Germany stipends that stayed at least three months in Germany before.
In the “Waste-free-Climate”-Workshop Alumni from Myanmar, Lao People´s Democratic Republic, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam get the chance to present their own projects and work together on solution with the help of researchers specialised in waste management and circular economy from TU Dresden and the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City in Viet Nam.
For this there will be four online workshops in April, July, October 2022 and January 2023 where with under external experts will present on topics related to the alumni’s projects and a strategy paper will be written by the entire group. Within the strategy paper current barriers and challenges for the waste management in the Mekong Region will be summarized and it will be pointed out how addressing these issues benefits people, economy, environment and climate. As the starting point for the whole workshop will be the alumni’s individual projects, the position paper will also help them communicate their current needs to the politicians which in turn will improve the likelihood of the projects’ success as the framework conditions might be improved.
Another online meeting will take place in 2022 where the project team will meet with two other Alumni Special Projects affiliated with the same program in order to exchange and discuss the progress of the individual workshops.
In Spring 2023 the project team and alumni will meet in Ho Chi Minh City to fine-tune the position paper in the course of a workshop week by taking in the local situation and getting into contact with experts and citizens. Afterwards everyone will participate together in the Mekong River Summit Conference in Lao People´s Democratic Republic.

The Alumni Special Project in the framework of the 4th Mekong River Commission will be realized with three German higher education institutions, each of which can select 15 Germany alumni and offer their trainings (online and in presence) on different topics. In addition to the above described training of the TU Dresden, there are two further calls for application of the University of Siegen and the University of Applied Sciences Köln (TH Köln). If you are interested in participating in this Alumni Special Project, we recommend that you also take a look at the calls of the other two projects and decide which of the topics covered are best suited to your professional background / interest or your current working project.
