Notes regarding scientific thesis process
1. Topic Selection
- Inform about the scientific activities of the Chair of Air Transport Technology and Logistics (projects, announcements, defense of scientific thesis via lectures and internet).
- You are welcome to bring your own topic according to personal interest.
- Practice-related and assisted topics are possible but linked to more efforts.
- The first contact with the IFL should be directed to the coordinator of student works with a specific topic request (currently Mrs. Dr.-Ing. Judith Rosenow).
- Please plan a period of at least 4 weeks for the finished topic, which also requires your support.
- The student registers at the Examinations Office and, after verification of the
the registration form from the Examination Office - The student has the first and second examiners sign the registration form.
on the registration form (so-called confirmation of acceptance of the expert opinions, can also be electronically signed) - Student signs user agreement in the examination office
- Issue of assignment and copy of the user agreement and the
guideline for the preparation of the thesis to the student takes place in the
Examination Office - https://tu-dresden.de/bu/verkehr/studium/pruefungsamt/abschlussarbeiten
2. Acceptance from the examination office at Mrs. Lindner
- Your processing time begins with the collection of the topic sheet and the assignment by the examination office at Mrs. Lindner through you.
- You are responsible for the fulfillment and confirmation of the admission requirements.
3. Editing and intermediate presentation
- Consultations should take place by appointment approximately every 2-4 weeks, depending on the phase and progress of the work more frequently or less frequently. The consultations should be understood as suggestions and brainstorming and do not replace your own efforts to fulfill your tasks.
- The interim presentation takes place as a group event with 2-3 other candidates approximately in the middle of the processing time ("Bergfest").
- Participation is voluntary, but it is much desired.
- You present 10 minutes with approx. 8-10 PowerPoint slides:
- Introduction, preparation of the topic
- Already done work, developed methodology, results
- Overview of the planned topic editing
- Current problems and / or questions
- Please pay attentin to an adequate presentation style and exact time keeping (important exercise for the defense, since part of the grade)
-
This will be followed by a panel discussion with questions and advice from the IFL members. You should expect notes to the introduced problems and questions (transcript!).
- The appintment is not intended to test the progress of your work or achievements, but to provide you a platform to discuss questions and problems with increased attendance as well as selected approaches to finding solutions. The primary goal of the interim presentation is to help you and to dissolve any existing uncertainties.
4. Submission to the examination office at Mrs. Lindner
- The thesis has to be submitted in due time (please inquire about applicable deadlines) with the number of required copies formally (Note: Do not forget the particular signatures, the title page and the oath declaration!) with Mrs. Lindner.
- Your work should be printed on both sides and bound in the required number of public and possibly non-public versions (see below).
- Pleas regard the guidelines of the faculty issued with the subject sheet and the notes of the IFL (see here).
- Formalities (illness, extension, etc.) are always to be clarified by the examination office. The IFL can only give non-binding advice.
- In addition, the supervisor must submit: electronic version of the work, poster (for diploma thesis), English abstract and English cover sheet in electronic form.
5. Defense
- After examination of the thesis the defense takes place approx. 4 weeks after delivery, the appointment has to be coordinated with the chair.
- It is highly recommended to visit a defense in advance to familiarize yourself with the process (for announcements see website).
- The duration of the presentation of the thesis is 20 minutes.
Notes about non-public works
- Due to sensitive company knowledge, work can be non-public.
- In this case, a tripartite agreement must be made between TUD / IFL, the practice partner and you before registering the work for which the chair is to be used (secrecy agreement).
- The written copy will be marked with a blocking note.
- This non-public version will be used for evaluation.
- The preparation of a public version is required for archival and publication purposes.
- It enables further scientific work.
- It creates transparency (your scientific degree).
- The public version must be approved by the practice partner.
- Sensitive cmpany knowledge has to be removed as necessary
- By deleting text passages
- By scaling values, painted axis labels on charts
-
Etc.
- Make sure that yur achievements, the scientific (universal) content as well as general knowledge, as far as justifiable, remain comprehensible.
- For this purpose, it is advisable to carry sensitive information already in the non-public version in the appendix or in separate chapters.
- Sensitive cmpany knowledge has to be removed as necessary
- The defense is a public event.
- Sensitive company knowledge may not be disclosed or only with permission.
- A brief written assessment f your thesis by the supervising company can help to bridge this gap.
