Teaching in the summer semester 2025
The following courses will be offered at the Chair of Industrial Management in the summer semester 2025. Registration in OPAL will start on 24.03.2025 / 09am (exceptions see below). Further details can be found by clicking on the name of the respective course and in the respective OPAL courses.
Lectures:
- Einführung Management Science: In this course you will learn the basic concepts of Management Science, Operations Research and Business Analytics. An overview of the main methods for solving planning and optimization problems in business practice is given and these are also applied in practice in the accompanying tutorials. A special focus is placed on mathematical programming and the use of heuristic solution methods.
- Operatives Produktionsmanagement: The OPM lecture provides students with up-to-date knowledge of business management methods in an area that lags behind the technological level of knowledge in many companies. The course covers demand forecasting, employment smoothing, capacity-based main production program planning, material requirements planning, short-term capacity balancing and machine allocation planning.
- Umweltorientierte Produktionsplanung: The analysis and modeling of the quantity and value-related use of production factors in the combination process is the subject of the UPP lecture, which serves as basic theoretical training. Production factor systems, production function types and adaptation strategies for Gutenberg technologies (including environmental considerations) are the focus here.
- Operations Research Vertiefung: Building on classical linear optimization, this course is initially dedicated to branch-and-bound algorithms and cutting plane methods that can be used to solve linear problems with integer requirements. In addition, decomposition approaches such as Benders decomposition or column generation are discussed. This is followed by the treatment of non-linear problems. In addition to the classical solution methods suitable for this purpose, newer heuristic solution algorithms are also presented, which are illustrated using selected problems.
Seminars:
- Advanced Approaches in Industrial Management: As part of this course, you will write a 25-page seminar paper in English on a selected industrial management topic and present your results in a lecture at the end of the course. Interested students should register in OPAL in the period from 24.03.-09.04.25 (including submission of a transcript of records). The kick-off event will take place on 11.04.25 / 10:30 am (HÜL 509).
- Bachelorseminar: This module and the 20-page seminar paper on industrial management topics are intended to prepare students for writing a Bachelor's thesis. Interested students should register in OPAL in the period from 24.03.-09.04.25 (including submission of a transcript of records). The kick-off event will take place on 11.04.25 / 11:10 am (HÜL 509).
- WPA seminar: In this seminar you will learn about the requirements for a scientific paper and apply the acquired knowledge in a 10-page seminar paper. Places for the seminar are allocated centrally by the Faculty. You can register in OPAL from 11.03.-11.04.25 and indicate your preferred focus via a survey. The students assigned to our chair will be added to a separate OPAL course with all further information after the allocation.
- WPA-Projekt Excel: In this seminar you will get to know the MS Excel software by means of interactive exercises on the PC. In terms of content, you will learn the basics and how to use the Excel solver to solve mathematical optimization problems. Enrolment (for all WPA projects) takes place centrally in OPAL from 07.04.-13.04.25.
- Umsetzung quantitativer Methoden der BWL mit R: The course from the area of "Methodological Basics" is dedicated to the programming language R, an open source software for (statistical) data analysis and graphics. In addition to the basics and the structure of the language, the focus is on the application of the language in a scientific paper. Enrollment is possible via OPAL from 23.04.25 / 09 am.
- Prescriptive Analytics mit Python: In this seminar you can deepen application-oriented programming with the language "Python" and implement approximation methods for optimization problems. Enrollment is possible via OPAL from 23.04.25 / 09 am.
- Instrumente und Anwendungen des IM: In this course, students will learn how to prepare scientific papers with LaTeX. In addition, an introduction to the software Gurobi will be given, which can be used to solve mathematical optimization problems. Enrolment is possible via OPAL from 24.03.25 / 09 am.
- In the IM Challenge a task from Zalando will be worked on in the summer semester of 2025. It is about the optimization of picking tasks in large warehouse centers. Registration is possible via OPAL from 24.03.25 / 09:30 am.
- Aktuelle Themen des IM: This semester, the event will again be held under the title "Advanced Data Analytics in Production Planning" and will be conducted by Tony Alexander (Siemens AG). Basic skills in SQL, business intelligence, and the R programming language are taught. Enrollment is available via OPAL starting 24.03.25 / 09 am.
If you have any questions about the events, please contact the respective responsible persons and we wish all our students of the summer semester a lot of fun and success!
