Introducing sustainability to the textile engineering curriculum to guide sustainable business practices of future managers in the Bangladesh textile industry
Dr Jonathan Morris and Frederik Plewnia from the Chair for Sustainability Management and Environmental Accounting of TU Dresden organized a 5-day workshop event in Dhaka, Bangladesh, taking place between 20th and 28th August 2019. The workshop event incorporated the closing conference of the German-Bangladesh Higher Education Network for Sustainable Textiles project[1]. The program of events was designed to give expert feedback to the draft curricula developed by the partner Universities based in Dhaka (Notre Dame University Bangladesh - NDUB and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology - AUST). The event also aimed to ensure long-term sustainability of the completed activities by providing training skills for University faculty staff to implement their new curricula and develop the necessary courses and academic infrastructure. The closing conference of the project was centred around two panel sessions – one involving academic perspectives on curriculum development and another focused on practitioner perspectives and processes with regards to integrating sustainability into curricula in Higher Education institutes. It provided the opportunity to disseminate the revised curricula, reflect on the collaboration process of the project and to outline the areas necessary for future development to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the new courses.
The workshop phase of the event involved guest academics from a European perspective along with faculty members of the Bangladeshi Universities, whilst the conference included additional attendees from the wider academic community in Bangladesh, including representation from the GIZ, the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, and the DAAD.
The final programme included the following events:
- Wednesday 21st August – Feedback workshop for the curriculum of NDUB
- Thursday 22nd August – Feedback workshop for the curriculum of AUST
- Sunday 25th August – Industrial Site Visit at DBL Group
- Monday 26th August – Project Closing Conference at the Six Seasons Hotel, Dhaka
- Tuesday 27th August – Training of Trainers and Implementation of Curriculum Workshop
