Sustainability meets efficiency: DFG funds research project on the use and planning of modular production networks and locations in the process industry
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved the project "Optimal planning of modular production networks and locations for a sustainable process industry - development and analysis of planning models for decision support". The project aims to develop a new supply chain framework that integrates mathematical optimization models for the planning of modular production networks and locations. It addresses the challenge of balancing uncertain demand and supply with the flexible production and logistics capacities in order to fully exploit the potential of modular production concepts.
In particular, mathematical optimization models for integrated location and route planning in modular production networks (location routing) as well as facility layout problems for modular production sites are developed, which take into account the specific requirements of modular production concepts. This requires extensive expansion to existing planning models and solution methods.
The project is being carried out in close cooperation with our project partner Prof. Stefan Lier from the FH Südwestfalen (Meschede) and will initially be funded for 24 months. The project enables innovative research in the field of operations research and offers numerous starting points for further research into the use and planning of modular production concepts.
