Change at the top of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB)
The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) in Wiesbaden has a new leader on its advisory board: Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum is the new chairman of the board of trustees. The 57-year-old economist was elected to the new post from the board last Friday.
Marcel Thum teaches at the Technische Universität in Dresden and is director of the local branch of the ifo institute. His research interests include political economy, finance, the labor market, and demography. He introduces his expertise in numerous committees and scientific working groups, including the Advisory Board to the Federal Ministry of Finance, which he has chaired since 2019. He was pleased to accept the election as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the BiB. "I look forward to the upcoming collaboration with all employees. Together, we want to contribute to further advancing the institute as a departmental research institute of high national and international rank."
Marcel Thum now takes the position of Prof. Dr. Ursula Staudinger, who is retiring from the Board of Trustees after ten years. During her term of office, there was a strong scientific orientation of the institute with a focus on aging research, family research and migration. The further development of the BiB as a research institution of scientific excellence and very high quality in policy consultation was very close to her heart. "In the past years, Mrs. Staudinger has set many valuable accents in the Board of Trustees and beyond, for which we thank her very much," says Prof.in Dr. C. Katharina Spieß, the acting director of the BiB on her departure from the Board of Trustees.
The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) is a departmental research institute of the federal government with headquarters in Wiesbaden and an office in Berlin. It has the task to investigate population development and structure and to advise the federal government and the federal ministries on the basis of scientific research work. An 18-member Board of Trustees accompanies the research and research-based policy consultation at the Institute and advises it in particular on research management issues. It consists of nine expert scientists, seven representatives of federal ministries as well as two representatives of the federal states.
