Jasmin Rutscher, Economics student for a semester abroad at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley
"My stay abroad has already taken place. From September to December 2021, I was able to study at the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley. It was a very special, exciting but also challenging time for me. Exciting not only because of the effects of BREXIT, which could be seen not only in less well-stocked supermarket shelves. It was particularly exciting due to the constantly changing coronavirus measures. The pandemic accompanied my entire stay. From an adapted application process at the UWS, to enrollment, course selection and finally course attendance. However, I was very lucky that I was able to attend at least one course per module on campus. I was therefore able to gain a good insight into the "normal" everyday life of a student at UWS.
With all the challenges, it was wonderful to know that I didn't have to walk this path alone. That I was supported. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Endriss. For the trust that was placed in me with this award. Without this financial support, many things would have been very difficult to implement or simply not possible at all. I had an exciting time, made great memories and got to know people and can only recommend an experience abroad to every student - even in times of corona."
Leon Kaufmann-Ludwig, Industrial Engineering and Management student for a semester abroad at the Universita degli Studi "Ca' Foscari' di Venezia"
"On February 1, I'm already taking the train to Venice. I will spend five months living and studying there, where you would normally expect to find mainly day tourists. I'm particularly excited about all the personal, cultural, linguistic and academic impressions I can take away from my time studying in Italy. For me personally, however, not only my chosen country Italy, but also Europe as a whole has a very special significance.
I believe that a united Europe and shared European values offer huge opportunities for us all, which are far more complex and everyday than just Erasmus funding for my semester abroad. Anyone who doesn't believe this can take a look at the United Kingdom and see what restrictions Brexit is now bringing with it. But I also believe that a common, European identity can above all be a counter-movement to hatred, exclusion and nationalistic ideas and can instead be understood as a statement of solidarity, unity and harmony.
Finally, I would of course like to thank Prof. Endriss and the entire selection committee around Stefan Albers for their trust in considering me for this valuable award and the accompanying financial support."
