E.F.A. - DIGITAL ADAPTIVE LEARNING GAME FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
The E.F.A. project supported the acquisition of skills in Saxony's micro and small enterprises in the social services sector concerning occupational health and safety. To this end, an adaptive digital learning game was developed as part of the project, which enables employees to carry out a comprehensive risk assessment. The player takes on the role of an expert in occupational safety (E.F.A.) to impart methodological and content-related knowledge for carrying out the risk assessment. The medium of the game and the game-based learning approach are also intended to increase learner motivation.
PROMOTION
The project was funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) & the Free State of Saxony.
Objectives:
- Development of a digital adaptive educational game that enables employees to carry out a comprehensive and legally compliant risk assessment
- Positive influence on behavior and attitudes with regard to the statutory occupational health and safety
- Support for the acquisition of competence in small and micro enterprises in Saxony with regard to occupational health and safety in order to be able to react to changed work requirements as well as to new risks and health hazards
- Strengthening of the competitiveness of Saxon companies through continuous training
- Sustainable implementation of digital learning in Saxon companies
Target group:
- Saxon small and micro enterprises in the social service sector, especially managers and employees who are entrusted with the tasks of occupational health and safety
In the educational game, the player takes on the role of an occupational safety expert (E.F.A.). The task is to find the way out of the jungle of duties and to complete various missions in the process. Among other things, the game character moves between relevant occupational health and safety actors and goes through the typical steps of a risk assessment.
The safe way through the jungle of duties:
Occupational safety organisation
Internal and external actors
Risk assessment
Assignment of duties
Game sections E.F.A.
With the help of the digital adaptive educational game, the "jungle of duties" of occupational health and safety is presented in a comprehensible and demonstrative manner. In a playful way, the legal requirements as well as suitable ways to implement the requirements in practice are conveyed. Thanks to the special educational game format, the training content is presented to the learner in a descriptive, application-oriented manner and adapted to the small business situation. At the same time, the format enables flexible learning independent of time and place. This enables more employees to take part in the training courses. The gameplay as a medium increases the motivation of the learners. These take an active role in the learning process. In addition, the educational game allows learning to be integrated into everyday work.
To prepare for the conception phase of the serious game, the initial situation is analyzed. Studies on the implementation of the risk assessment in care institutions and on the current state of knowledge of employees in Saxony are viewed, analyzed and processed. Using various methods, the needs of the target group are determined. Amongst others, this includes information about which obstacles and difficulties are present in carrying out the risk assessment.
Based on this, a didactic concept for the educational game is created, including the game idea, story, mechanics and scenarios. At the same time, the development of the entire training concept the learning game is embedded in takes place. The learning content is prepared in terms of media didactics and “translated” into game scenarios. An appealing and target group-oriented screen design is developed. At the same time, the development of a technical infrastructure takes place, which enables the implementation of the screen design as well as content and game scenarios.
The resulting educational game and the further training measure will be tested and evaluated within the framework of the project in companies of TWSD AG and other Saxon companies. A transfer concept for the sustainable use and anchoring of the learning tool in existing further training offers is being developed by the SLfG.
