Graduate Academy

The Graduate Academy is the central service location for all doctoral candidates and postdocs of the TU Dresden for all questions around the doctorate and beyond. The Graduate Academy offers its members a qualification program specifically designed for young scientists, individual advice and information before, during and after the doctorate, own funding programs for doctoral candidates and postdocs and events providing the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and networking.

The joint Postdoc Center is a project of the TU Dresden and the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf under the umbrella of the Graduate Academy. We offer tailor-made services for early career researchers after their doctorate . Our goal is to support you, as an early career researcher of the TU Dresden or the HZDR, optimally in your decision-making process and in planning and implementing subsequent career steps.

After the Doctorate

A variety of career paths exist for junior researchers. After a postdoc-phase of several years, the position as independent Junior Research Group Leader has been established as a next attractive career step. In contrast to the appointment for professorship, Junior Research Group Leader are appointed even without the habilitation. The TU Dresden supports Junior Research Group Leader by awarding the temporary status TUD Young Investigator.

Five good reasons for a scientific career at TU Dresden

1. A wide range of subject matters and a strong interdisciplinary network
As a comprehensive university of technology, TU Dresden offers a wide range of disciplines for pursuing doctorates and research. The focus is on interdisciplinary research activities which are realized i.e. within a series of structured doctoral programs.

2. Success in the excellence strategy
The TU Dresden is one of eleven German Universities of Excellence (since June 2012). This success in the Excellence initiative can be seen as a proof of its achievements in top-level research and, at the same time, a commitment to creating excellent conditions especially for young researchers. Therefore, doctoral candidates and postdocs find a dynamic, international and inspiring research environment at TU Dresden, as well as an optimum of support.

3. Networks to promote young researchers
With the Graduate Academy, TU Dresden offers a central service point for doctoral candidates and postdocs that contributes significantly to creating optimal conditions for young researchers.  Further services for early career researchers at the TU Dresden are offered by the Welcome Center, the Center for Continuing Education and the Career Service.   

4. DRESDEN concept- a unique alliance of excellent research and culture
Dresden as a research location is characterized by a dense network and a vivid exchange between the TU Dresden and the local non-university research institutes which together form the research alliance DRESDEN concept. Non-university research facilities offer a wide range of job opportunities for doctoral candidates and postdocs. Therefore, they are a cornerstone of the excellent promotion of young researchers in the whole Dresden region.   

5. Family-friendliness and a high quality of life in Dresden
Dresden is known as a particularly family-friendly city. Numerous day-care facilities, affordable flats and a generally child-friendly atmosphere allow for a good work-life-balance. The wide range of culture on offer as well as the attractive natural surroundings contribute to the high quality of life in Dresden.

Research Promotion

The directorate "Research" continuously inform you about current Funding Programmes of the Federal Government, the federal states, DFG and the EU, as well as other national and international funding institutions and foundations. The team supports you in filing an application for third party funded research projects and in negotiating and concluding research contracts.

TU Dresden's Welcome Center

The Welcome Center staff will be glad to assist all international visiting researchers and PhD students staying for more than three months before and after your arrival to Dresden to facilitate your acclimatisation. We counsel and inform on immigration regulations, insurances and other formalities, help you to find an apartment and a kindergarten/school for your children, provide other information and access to the international networks at the TU Dresden and DRESDEN-concept institutions.

reconcili­ation of family and academic career

What is the actual family policy component in the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” and how is this discretionary provision handled at TU Dresden? Is it possible for a fixed-term employment contract to be extended for the duration of maternity or parental leave? What are the family-related regulations for scholarship holders? What services are available for junior researchers in terms of childcare and advice? These and many more questions will be answered by the teams of the Unit 9.3 Diversity Management.
