Technological Testing Grounds: Border Tech and Human Rights
Border technologies such as drone surveillance, artificial intelligence lie detectors, and algorithms are increasingly used to control borders and manage migration. Yet what are the experiences of people on the move as they interact with these panopticons on the frontiers of Europe and what are the human rights implications for the development and deployment of unregulated yet high-risk technologies to increasingly automate migration control? Join Petra Molnar, a lawyer and researcher specializing in migration and technology for a discussion of her ongoing work in Greece and along the frontiers of
Europe reflecting on her recent report Technological Testing Grounds: Migration Management Experiments and Reflections from the Ground Up.
Petra Molnar is a lawyer, researcher, and the Associate Director of the Refugee Law Laboratory, York University. She is co-creating the Migration and Technology Monitor, an interdisciplinary initiative to investigate the use of surveillance and automated technologies on people crossing borders. Petra Molnar holds an MA in Anthropology from York University, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Toronto, and an LL.M in International Law from the University of Cambridge and frequently shares her work with policy makers and international press as an expert on the human rights impacts of technologies at the border.
