Block internship A
Module name:
Block internship A in vocational schools (EW-SEBS-BW-3)
Qualification goals:
"Students have an overview of the structure and organization of vocational schools in Germany and the relevant school law principles and can classify the special features of their Department. They are able to observe, describe and reflect on learning environments in vocational education according to selected criteria." (Study regulations for the degree program Teacher Training - Vocational Schools from 25.4.2023, p. 548)
In block placement A, you will spend 80 hours observing classes over the course of 4 weeks during the lecture-free period. It is worth visiting as many classes, teachers and types of schools as possible in order to experience the breadth and diversity of the vocational teaching profession. What should happen with these perceptions? Why are they valuable for your professionalization? We are guided here by Neuweg's (2022) explanations on the "induction" figure of thought (p. 72 ff.). The core of the argument is as follows: You have all actively experienced more than 13,000 hours of teaching in the past and have always judged and evaluated the actions of teachers based on dependencies. This has resulted in numerous subjective theories that are both consciously and unconsciously a part of you. When lessons are observed, you will selectively perceive situations and classify them on the basis of your many years of experience ("cognitive and emotional filters", p. 72). What we would now like you to do in your internship is to look at such situations in a new light and consider which terms, models or "theories" could I use to analyze this situation more professionally? You can use some of the "theories" from the BW2 module (Designing learning environments in vocational education and training) for this purpose. This is about "encounters between subjective theories and objective theories that are guided by the goal of effectively anchoring objective theories; thus the import of scientific concepts, models and theories into the cognitive structure of learners remains the benchmark for the success of teacher education." (Neuweg, 2022, p. 79 f.)
You will also have the opportunity to get to know school as an organizational system with its different areas and requirements. You can also try things out and gain your own initial teaching experience, e.g. by accompanying group work, providing a motivating introduction to a new topic or supporting individual students in selected teaching phases.
The portfolio, which you will complete as part of the module, also includes the task of dealing with a selected focus as part of a small academic paper. We will go into more detail about these requirements during the preparatory events in BW3.
