State examination theses in the teaching profession in the field of educational science in the winter semester 2025/26

The ForUS - University School Research Unit at TU Dresden and the Chair of Education / Inclusive Education offer state examination theses in the context of the accompanying research of the University School Dresden pilot project. The aim of the state examination thesis is for you to work independently on a defined scientific research topic and present it in writing. After the information on the registration procedure and formalities, you will find a list of the topics below on which we currently offer theses and can support you.

If you are writing your state examination thesis at the research center of the University School Dresden (USD), we assume that you will participate in our research colloquium (at least 2 dates). The topics or questions listed under 'Focus' are possible contents for final theses. Preference should be given to these topics; in special individual cases, other topics are possible by arrangement.

Requests for StEx work - Current information

Registration for state examination theses at the University School ForUS research unit for the winter semester 2025/26 is possible until July 10, 2025. You will receive feedback by mid-July, at the latest at the beginning of August.
The topics for the summer semester 2026 will be announced in January 2026. You can find an overview of past StEx topics in the ForUS and EWIB news (see links below).

Registration procedure

To apply, please send an email to forus@tu-dresden.de by July 10, 2025, briefly explaining why you are interested in the topic. Please also indicate whether you have already attended a seminar in the context of the University School Dresden or have done an internship at the University School Dresden. You can also mention any previous experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research. If you have no previous experience with empirical research, you should be prepared to familiarize yourself with it.

You are expected to receive feedback at the beginning of August. Only one student can be assigned to each topic. If you are interested in several topics, please write separate e-mails.

Notes on formalities

  • The form for the registration of the "academic paper" must be submitted.
  • You need one person for the first and one person for the second assessment. We can support you with this.
  • The time required to complete the state examination thesis is 6 months.
  • The number of pages of a standard thesis varies from approx. 50 to 80 pages.
  • Please follow the academic standards (e.g. Harvard) when formatting/citing your thesis.

Learning support and target agreement meetings

Focus

 The learning support staff at Dresden University School were asked about their assessment of the target agreement meetings. If necessary, further interviews will be conducted on the topic of ZVG.

Parent survey

Focus

 In November 2025, parents at Dresden University School will be asked to take part in an online survey. Various questions will be asked, for example, about the assessment of learning quality and motives for choosing a school. Initially, a separate question is to be developed.

Topic 3

Development of reading and writing skills (HSP)

Focus

 How do the spelling skills of pupils at Dresden University School develop over time? For individual students, they analyze the data of the Hamburg Writing Sample (HSP) over several survey dates, the test for reading comprehension and also the writings in the logbook

Topic 4

Individual results feedback in mathematics (DEMAT)

Focus

At the university school, mathematical skills are assessed annually using a standardized test (DEMAT). There is not yet any appropriate feedback for this at pupil level. On the basis of existing data, an (automated) individual feedback is to be developed, which can be used at school. Experience in using R is desirable.

Topic 5

ZVG digital

Focus

 The students at the university school are closely monitored from year 7 onwards with goal and assessment meetings. You will analyze the documentation of the students' goal and assessment discussions with regard to the goals set and completed and also the support provided by the learning guides.

Topic 6

Digital learning diaries

Focus

 From year 7 onwards, students at the university school formulate their goals for each learning unit and then reflect on the achievement of these goals. You will analyze a selected period of time for several students and analyze the entries with regard to the implementation of more self-regulated learning.

Dresden University School is a joint project of the state capital of Dresden and the TUD Dresden University of Technology. It is a public and free community school run by the city, where innovative forms of teaching and learning are tested under academic supervision. In addition, it is a training school for future teachers and, in the future, a further education school for teachers.
