Chair of Education / Quantitative Research Methods
The term "method" - μέθοδος - means something like "following", "pursuing" ... .
In science, the term does not refer to a loose collection of techniques - rather, it is about a systematized way of going forward, of approaching, of thinking critically.
Scientificity is not determined by the content dealt with, but by the scientific nature of the methods used. Research methods are translation tools that help us to translate phenomena into questions, hypotheses into research designs, collected data into analyses and finally results into communicable interpretations. Research methods thus permeate all phases of the cognitive process without exception - and not only in academic research!
Particularly at a time when opinions are often confused with evidence, knowledge of social science methods provides a lens for "looking at the world" that extends far beyond the walls of the supposed ivory towers.
"Science doesn't give a fuck what you believe." (Ricky Gervais)
