Organisational Matters
If you are planning a semester abroad, there are a variety of aspects to consider. Below you will find a short guide that will give you an overview:
There are several options of organising your stay abroad - often depending on the financial organisation. Here is an overview over the possibilities:

-

It is recommended that planning of your stay abroad begins at least one year in advance of its start. Depending on your course of studies, some semesters are more suitable for a stay abroad than others. Before your stay can begin, there are several deadlines that you will have to meet: application deadlines for financing the stay, application deadlines if you apply for funding and enrolment deadlines at the university you will be staying at.
Depending on your course of studies and the university you will be attending abroad, it is to be recommended that you check whether you meet certain prerequisites:
- Regarding your course of studies: Are there subjects you need to know about before you attend certain courses abroad (admission requirements)? This might mean that you have to have - successfully - finished a certain semester before being able to go abroad.
- Regarding your language skills: Do you speak the language of the country you will live in? Does the university there require a certain language level?
- Intercultural skills: For an ideal start of your time abroad, it is essential that you understand the culture you will be living in. Extensive research or an intercultural course can help you with that.
The costs of a stay abroad consist of the following aspects:
- tuition fees / fees for a language course
- travel costs
- living expenses
Information on the living expenses and on whether or not you will need to pay tuition fees can be found on the website of DAAD.
The International Office can consult you on different funding options. Noteworthy is, on the one hand, the Erasmus exchange program and on the other hand the large number of cooperations between TU Dresden and other universities world wide - at some of which you can even earn a double degree or do not need to pay tuition fees.
Furthermore, there are several options of applying for individual scholarships. The International Office will help you apply for those as well.
A stay abroad does not necessarily mean that you will exceed the standard period of study. A semester on leave is recommended for the duration of your studies abroad. Semesters on leave do not count as a regular semester and academic performances abroadwill be regognised.
