Focal area of research: Social networking skills

Social contacts are of great importance not only in private but also in professional life. In recent years, for example, about 40% of the graduates of Technische Universität Dresden found their first job after graduation through contacts they had made during their studies, e.g. through internships. In sociology and psychology, these social networking skills have received particular attention under terms such as 'social capital' (sociology) or 'social networking' (psychology) since the 1970s. The focus of the analysis is on contacts in the professional context, which are intended to promote professional advancement. With the rapid development of new communication tools and social media (e.g. Facebook, Xing), new possibilities arise to adopt practices that aim at establishing and maintaining social contacts as well as promoting the exchange of resources. In order to record social network behaviour, a questionnaire was developed and used in cultural comparison on samples from Germany, Chile and Bulgaria. It was possible to demonstrate correlations to characteristics that facilitate and hinder these behaviours (personality) as well as to the consequences of these behaviours (change in network structure). The instrument will be further developed and validated.
