Historical contexts
The study of history is certainly helpful in getting to know the contexts of cultural change, which are also necessary for an understanding of language history. However, this cannot be taken for granted, nor can a thematically wide-ranging history lesson. The following (partly popular scientific) documentaries are no substitute for a scientific introduction to the history of Central Europe, but they are nevertheless (or perhaps precisely for this reason) an enrichment as an illustrative framework for the teaching content.
Please note, however, that documentaries of this kind tend to reduce complexity (and to be somewhat pathetic). This is especially true when it comes to the 'authenticity' of historical figures and sources - questions in this regard should be discussed in class.
