Project
Utopia Europe Prize 2021 – Team of students from TU Dresden participates in debate competition
Logo of the “Utopia Europe 2020” project at German universities, organized by the Institut français Germany and the Franco-German University.
Following a series of virtual discussions on the topic “Utopia Europe – Digital Utopia?” in cooperation with the Center for France and Francophonie in September 2020, a team of students from TU Dresden is participating in the final round of the ideas competition.
Based on the results of the discussions, the students developed their proposal to establish a “European Culture and Education Platform (EuKuB) – digital, borderless, and sustainable.”
With this, the students aim to offer a sustainable solution based on the current challenging situation that promotes European exchange and intercultural learning through digitalization, regardless of national borders.
The proposal further states:
“Each year, a commission will set a thematic focus to which musicians, artists, and authors can submit their digital projects. The commission, consisting of European representatives from the fields of culture and education of various age groups, will make a selection and publish the results on the platform. Publication is accompanied by financial support for the artists. To ensure the sustainable use of the works and to promote intercultural exchange, all EU member states have unrestricted access to the platform. Accompanying materials can be provided for educational contexts, and the platform allows artists to be digitally invited for discussions and presentations.”
Would you like to learn more about the concept of the European Culture and Education Platform? Then please join the virtual closing event and support the student team from TU Dresden.
- When: March 22, 2021, 4:30 PM – 8:40 PM
- Location: Online event
- Organizers: University Cooperation of the Institute français Germany and the Franco-German University, this time in cooperation with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Germany and the European Commission Representation in Germany

Inhabiting a Border – Time of Shadows. Reading and conversation with Léonora Miano
Poster on the occasion of “Eine Grenze bewohnen – Zeit des Schattens” (Inhabiting a Border – Time of Shadows) – Online reading and discussion with Léonora Miano (Cameroon) on April 15, 2021.
How can we today conceive of the relationships between Europe and Africa in a new way, one oriented toward the problems of the present and the future? One of the most important and widely discussed French-language writers currently addressing this question is Léonora Miano. Born in Cameroon, the author lives and writes across continents: in her country of origin, in France, and in Togo. Her novels, plays, and essays have been honored with numerous awards. In them, she reflects on colonial history and the necessary decolonization of its narrative, its impact on the present, and the possibilities of a future shaped by the overcoming of exclusionary identities.
With the novel "Zeit des Schattens" and the essay collection "Eine Grenze bewohnen" (both published by w_orten & meer in 2020), two texts by Léonora Miano are now available in German translation for the first time. The reading and discussion with the author on the occasion of these publications is the first of its kind in the German-speaking world.

Guest Lecture
Small Universality. Narrative World-Fabrications After Universalism. Lecture and discussion with Prof. Dr. Markus Messling
Poster on the occasion of the online lecture “Small Universality: Narrative World-Fabrications After Universalism” by Prof. Dr. Markus Messling on June 15, 2021.
The debate on world literature, which is one of the cultural debates of our time concerning global validity, is conducted in the Francophone world under the term “littérature-monde,” thereby pointing to the problem of globality: The decline of Western universalism since 1990 has been accompanied by a return to realism. How to conceive of approaches to a new universality—without which knowledge and justice cannot be organized in global society—thus proves to be a problem of narrative world-shaping.
Markus Messling is a professor of Romance Cultural Studies at Saarland University. He was deputy director of the Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin and has held visiting professorships and fellowships in Paris, Cambridge, London, and Kobe.
When: June 15, 2021, 6:00–7:30 p.m.
Where: Online event; advance registration required at cff_dresden[at]mailbox.tu-dresden.de
