Being a robot for once - in the computer science research workshop for elementary school classes
Since February 2023, almost 300 students from elementary schools in Dresden and the surrounding area have participated in the Computer Science Research Workshop in the School Lab EduInf of the Chair of Computer Science Education.
After the Research Workshop Computer Science could only take place partially in 2020 and not at all in 2021 and 2022, it was revived in a new format in 2023.
In the Computer Science Research Workshop, elementary school classes and groups can discover and explore the world in which they live, which is permeated by computer science, in a playful way in workshops lasting about 3 hours. The focus is on questions such as: How do you program a robot? How does a computer store images? How does a message arrive on the right smartphone?
At the beginning of each offering, children explore computer science systems in their living world and explore the basic structure and operation with input, processing, and output. After drawing pixel images and learning about binary representation, children take on the roles of robots and computer scientists and program each other. Depending on their wishes and grade level, the children can then program with ScratchJr or the Calliope mini.
