Topic "LiveEarth VR" (working title)
Advisor: Sebastian Vogt
Introduction: video
There are several geostationary satellites in earth orbit which are used among other things for weather forecasting. Some of these satellites are owned by governmental organizations and the recorded data are made available to the public. This concerns, among other things, high-resolution images of the earth.
Furthermore there are many free APIs that provide live data. (For example: aircraft data, shipping data, elevation map data, weather data, satellite positions)
In the scope of this project a VR application is to be created, in which a globe with a dynamic texture can be investigated. In this application live data from different APIs shall be displayed.
Challenges
- Collecting "live" images from different sources
- Combining images to a homogenous texture
- Exploration and interaction methods for VR application have to be created (filtering, moving, rotating, time...)
- reasonable visualization of the data
Requirements
- Advanced knowledge in computer graphics and data visualization
- Experience developing:
- ...VR applications
- ...with the cgv framework
Topic "HistoCaching II" (working title)
Advisor: Benjamin Russig
Introduction: video
In cooperation with the German Office of Records from the State Security Service (aka. Stasi) of the former GDR ("Bundes-Stasi-Unterlagenbehörde", BStU), the goal of this complex lab is the development of a mobile application that makes use of Augmented Reality to showcase historical information, e.g. fotographs or maps, in the context of the real world.
The application is aimed at tourists and everyday citizens, with the intent of enabling them to explore Stasi activity on campus in a manner similar to geocaching.
Challenges
- localizing geo-referenced information inside the view of a mobile phone / tablet camera
- applying techniques from computer vision to spatially track the image location of any displayed information as the camera moves around, in face of an unstable or unreliable GPS signal
- Design and implementation of intuitive, user-friendly interfaces in the front- and backends of the app that enables non-computer scientists to curate the presented information
Requirements
- Advanced knowledge in computer graphics or computer vision
- Drive and commitment to deliver an end product that can actually be used by the general public
- Experience developing:
- ...mobile applications in Unity
- ...client/server backends
- ...databases
- Avid interest in the history of our university, Dresden, and the former East German communist state
