Faculty specific information
We are delighted that you are considering studying at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden! International applicants for an exchange must first apply to our International Office. Details can be found here.
Learning Agreement for student exchange
Learning Agreements are created based on modules from our course catalog. You can view the modules offered under study documents on the respective degree program websites. There you will also find detailed module descriptions in German and English as PDF downloads.
In the German module descriptions, credit points are called "Leistungspunkte" (LP).
- Check these descriptions for course content, teaching period (i.e. whether the module is offered in the winter or summer semester), examinations, workload, etc.
- Choose as many ECTS credits per semester as specified by your home institution! If you are not sure or have not been given any guidelines, put together modules worth 25-30 credits!
- Make sure that you can complete the selected modules within your mobility period. Some modules run over two semesters. You may not be able to complete these if you are only studying with us for one semester! In the module description you will find information on the "Duration of the module".
- Please note that you must choose at least 70% of your modules from the Faculty of Computer Science's range!
-
The selected modules must be entered in Table A of the Learning Agreement and signed by the student and the exchange coordinators of both universities. Our coordinator will sign your Learning Agreement digitally, regardless of whether your home university uses OLA or you send the Learning Agreement as a PDF by e-mail.
-
The assignment of specific courses/lectures to the corresponding modules can be found in the catalog of courses offered in the respective semester. Please note: the actual "course offerings" are usually only available a few weeks before the start of the semester. However, you can use the courses offered in the previous winter/summer semester as a guide!
ECTS credits are only awarded for successfully completed modules!
Required language skills
Please note that most of our courses in the Bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science and Applied Computer Science are held in German. Your German language skills should be good enough to follow the courses (at least B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Our Master's programs in Computer Science and Computational Modeling and Simulation are taught in English. For courses in these programs, English language skills of at least B2 level are recommended.
The academic calendar
In Germany, the academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters. In addition to the major summer vacation, there are also a few lecture-free weeks in October, at Christmas and at Whitsun. You can find the exact dates in the TU Dresden academic calendar.
Timetable
Each teaching block lasts 90 minutes. This corresponds to 2 SWS (semester hours per week). There is a 20-minute break in between. You can find a timetable here.
To avoid conflicts in the schedule, you should choose modules from a degree program. Nevertheless, there may be time overlaps. In particular, if modules are chosen that are assigned to the compulsory elective area of the degree program, it cannot be guaranteed that there will be no overlaps.
You can find relevant information about welcome events and your first weeks at TU Dresden here.
Handbooks in German and English can be downloaded here.
If you have any further questions, please contact our tutors.
OPAL
OPALis the central online learning platform at Saxon universities. The teaching staff provide materials and information about courses via this platform.
Register for your courses in good time , the links to the corresponding OPAL pages are usually linked on the websites of the Chair offering the corresponding course or can be found using the search function. Simply copy the course name and make sure you register for the current course. Older courses from previous semesters often remain on the platform after they have ended.
Selma
Exchange students can use Selma like regular students to register for exams and courses (the latter only in rare cases). You can also view and download personal documents such as your certificate of enrollment.
Registering for examinations in Selma is important so that you can be credited for the modules you have completed. The main purpose of registering in OPAL is so that you can access course material.
Language courses
Preparatory German courses
Before the start of the semester, you have the opportunity to take part in intensive German courses. Language courses are offered by the TUDIAS Language Center. You can find more information about course offers, times and fees on the TUDIAS website.
German courses during the semester
You can also take German courses during the semester. These are free of charge and suitable for many different language levels. A prerequisite for course participation is the completion of a placement test.
You can find more information here: Language courses at TU Dresden
Sports program
Various sports courses are offered at TU Dresden. If you want to register, you should be quick, as there are only a limited number of places available each semester.
The courses are offered by the Dresden University Sports Center.
Transcript of Records
Please note that your transcript of records is not created automatically! You must first contact the Examination Office of the Faculty of Computer Science and ask for the transcript of records to be provided.
