Vibrant Research - Dense Networks
Over €63 million of third-party funds a year testify to the research strength of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering. Here, students become involved (with research) at an early stage of their studies. The networking with the non-university research institutions of Dresden is self-explanatory, close and fruitful. The cooperation with the Helmholtz Centres as well as the Frauenhofer and Leibniz Institutes make it easier for students to gain access to industrial and research placements and internships. Research at the Faculty of Mechanical science and engineering
The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering unites the departments of
- Mechanical Engineering,
- Process Engineering and Natural Materials Technology as well as
- Material Science
and is the scientific home for almost all classes of materials and substances. This interdisciplinarity allows a holistic view of material developments on an atomic level through to applications on a macroscopic scale in machining and processing techniques, in process design and process layout, in product design, in the associated processing machines and production facilities and thus overall for sustainable material, product and process design.
Our faculty drives technological progress. Regardless of whether it concerns products, components, systems, materials, manufacturing processes, technologies, systems or software: Engineers have a particular influence on the value chain, which extends from idea generation and conception to design and implementation. Thematic core competencies exist in the basic fields of:
- Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Production Engineering, Design Engineering, Material Science and Process Engineering
and in the bundling of research clusters and focal points:
- Function-integrative lightweight system construction in multi-material design, Efficient energy technologies and systems, Multifunctional materials for technology and medicine, Sustainable natural material technologies, Integrated resource-conserving product creation, Material potential-oriented, holistic product process, Innovative aerospace systems.
Technological change on the one hand and the complexity of new systems on the other require networking with the social sciences and humanities. The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering assumes responsibility within the framework of interdisciplinary research areas. The main objectives are the efficient and targeted acquisition of knowledge and the transfer of skills within the focal areas of
- Products and processes in the circular economy
- Digitalization in health, production, construction and agriculture
- Machines and systems for mobility and logistics
- Interactions between technology, people (society) and the environment
- Machines and processes for energy conversion
- Materials of the future
In these subject areas, the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering works with its 13 Institutes and over 50 Chairs, in interdisciplinary competence centers, in close cooperation within DRESDEN-concept and with partners from science and industry/practice and actively supports social dialogue. Of course, the promotion and support of young scientists is a particular concern of our faculty and contributes to strengthening the future concept of TU Dresden.
