Studying mechanical engineering despite visual impairment - MDR report
19-year-old Jacob Michels doesn't let his severe visual impairment stop him: He is studying mechanical engineering in his first semester at TU Dresden - with the aim of later specializing in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. An MDR report impressively shows how Jacob masters his day-to-day studies with a great deal of ambition and technical support.
Jacob uses aids such as a magnifying camera and an electronic magnifying glass in his lectures. The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering also grants compensation for disadvantages in exams. Nevertheless, studying remains a daily balancing act between inclusion and personal initiative.
Jacob's story shows that it is possible to study at university with a disability - if the framework conditions are right and personal motivation is high enough.
Regarding the MDR report: Due to legal regulations, this is only available for internal viewing for associate members of TU Dresden. In the VideoCampus Saxony portal, you must navigate to the video under "All media".
