IIT Delhi visits TU Dresden
Coordinated by the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK), the TU Dresden and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi are working closely together in the joint project COMPOLL (Combating Environmental Pollution through Internationalisation of Education). Based on a long and rich history of cooperation, the aim oft he project is to establish a strategic collaboration to combat environmental pollution and reduce the human footprint. Particular focus is given to Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Noise Pollution and Waste Management.| Further to COMPOLL project website.
In June 2023, a delegation from IIT Delhi visits TU Dresden. On the agenda are COMPOLL project partner meeting, various appointments with scientists of the TU Dresden and meetings with the multipliers of the Dresden area, as well as the participation in the 26th Lightweight Engineering Symposium.
Prof. Bahni Ray (IIT Delhi, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Prof. Sanjeev Sanghi (IIT Delhi, Department of Applied Mechanics) , together with PhD students Shivang Rampryian (IIT Delhi, Department of Mechanical Engineering, PhD Fellow) and Jonty Mago (IIT Delhi, Center for Automotive Research & Tribology, PhD Fellow; COMPOLL Internee at ILK), see themselves as multipliers of the bilateral DAAD/UCG education project.

Due to the broad range of topics and the interdisciplinary nature of COMPOLL, as many scientists as possible from both universities should be involved in the project. We were hosted in Pirna by the Institute for Waste Management and Circular Economy (IAK) and Prof. Christina Dornack; we met Dr.-Ing. Karin Schwarzenberger, Group Leader Interfacial Phenomena at the Chair of Transport Processes at Interfaces at the TU Dresden; we invited Prof. Bhabani K. Satapathy (IIT Delhi, Department of Materials Science and Engineering; 2002 as DAAD scholarship holder at the ILK and currently as visiting professor at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden e. V., IPF) to the project partner meeting; and finally, we participated in the Sustainability Week of the TU Dresden.

At the project partner meeting on June 19th, 2023, the focus was on the possibilities for joint study programs and linkage with other international activities of the ILK. Dr. Sebastian Spitzer presented the Lighthouse National Network Korea to the COMPOLL partner and together we explored the possibilities of a tri-national cooperation. The COMPOLL partner again presented its cooperation with TU Delft and with regard to the ILK cooperation with Dr. J.M.J.F. (Julien) van Campen (TU Delft, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Structures and Computational Mechanics Group, Assistant Professor) we jointly discussed the possibilities for an ERASMUS Mundus Master program.

The highlight of the networking activities was the COMPOLL participation at the 26th International Dresden Lightweight Engineering Symposium of the Akademischer Club Leichtbau an der TU Dresden e.V. (ACL) and the ILK "Neutral Lightweight Engineering - Moving Europe" on June 22nd and 23rd, 2023. The COMPOLL team operated a fair trade booth here, and amongst others presented the IIT Delhi as an attractive destination for study abroad from Germany, presented scientific work of Prof. Ray, Prof. Dagupta, Prof. Bijwe, Prof. Darpe and Jonty Mago with scientific posters, explained the HoliMaker Recycling Workshop of the ILK and presented the possibilities for COMPOLL mobility (study, teaching stays, participation in summer schools and other events - short stays, trainee- and internships etc.) to all interested parties. In addition, another DAAD educational project of the ILK, the EDI:TUD, was integrated in this exhibition and Ms. Fathia Fadila brought the topics of the service and welcome culture at the TU Dresden for international students. The participation of our COMPOLL guests at this year's Lightweight Enginieering Symposium has also already been designed with the planned country partnership #India for the 27th Lightweight Engineering Symposium in the mind.

Another important part of the June IITD visit is the implementation of the first COMPOLL teaching in Dresden. Prof. Ray and her PhD student, Mr. Shivang Rampryian offered an intensive block course on water pollution.

We will follow up on the activities during this COMPOLL visit in our next meetings: in October 2023, when we will host more IIT Delhi guests and offer COMPOLL teaching again in Dresden, and in November/December 2023 in New Delhi, where we will on the one hand accompany the Rector and the CTIO of TU Dresden on their trip to India and on the other hand organize the COMPOLL Winter School on Pollution, Life-Cycle Assessment and Recycling.
