What we do:

Dresden is one of Germany’s leading places in materials research and even holds an international top position in this field. In order to consolidate this leading edge, "ECEMP – European Centre for Emerging Materials and Processes Dresden” was founded in 2007.

In total 40 professorships from 24 Institutes of the TU Dresden, the HTW Dresden and the TU Freiberg are involved in the centre, creating an extensive network of multidisciplinary research. In the 14 subprojects of ECEMP, research is focused on the development of multicomponent materials and their associated technologies for the three future fields of ECEMP: energy management, environmental technology and lightweight engineering.

The scientists at ECEMP are experts for all classes of materials, as metals, plastics, natural compounds and ceramics, and the complete value chain: material design (CMS), development, production, processing and application of components. This offers a variety and broadness, which is currently unique in Germany.

In August 2008, ECEMP was awarded the Initiative of Excellence of the Free State of Saxony. In the following 5 years it will be funded by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony with 35 million Euros. Furthermore, ECEMP is going to acquire further subsidies in the same order itself. After this start-up funding, the cluster of excellence ECEMP is supposed to be self-financing and assert itself in the international competition.

Our aims:

• Development of innovative multi-component materials with broad application spectrum
• Development of appropriate technologies
• Continuous simulations from atoms to complex devices

Measures for knowledge- and technology transfer:

• Foundation of an international graduate school with three lectures
• Establishment of two interdisciplinary master’s degrees
• Establishment of a materials science newspaper (Open Access Journal)
• Establishment of a technology transfer office in the transfer centre of the TUD
