Fibre-reinforced plastic composites (FRP) with a thermoplastic matrix enable the production of lightweight structures in the shortest possible time. By utilising the specific material properties of FRP, new types of assembly interfaces and connections between different materials can be realised. This results in local changes to the material structure, which are precisely investigated and optimised using innovative modelling strategies and experimental methods.

European Green Deal Strategy seeks for a 90% reduction in emissions by 2050 through the introduction of more sustainable, affordable, accessible, healthier and cleaner alternatives.

An in situ CT method was developed in the TRR285 to analyse deformation and damage phenomena in mechanical joints directly during the joining process. A new multi-material joining tool and a beryllium testing device enable high-quality X-ray projections. This method allows three-dimensional tracking of the phenomena at the clinching point for the first time.
