Locations and Institutes
At Zeuner-Bau, we research and teach at the heart of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering. We work in close cooperation with other institutes within the faculty while combining research and industry collaborations with the study of design, especially in the advanced stages of the course. The thematic priorities include the user-centered development of mobile machines, human-machine interaction and visualisation in the product development process.

Our second location is August-Bebel-Straße 20 (ABS), situated on the edge of campus. Here we share a building with the art historians and musicologists. The priorities of research and industry collaboration are the design and evaluation of product experience and the user-centered development of stationary machines (design of capital goods). The initial study of design mainly takes place in this building, including lectures on the design fundamentals courses and the first design projects. Our workshop for building design models and mock-ups as well as the student model-making workshop is also located here.
Our third location can be found at Kraftwerk Mitte. In order to facilitate a direct exchange between transfer in the area of research and development and the creative scene in Dresden, as well as to surround ourselves with real world business, we have rented two small offices for collaboration purposes.

The laser cutter, 3D Printer, etc. are part of a modern design model-making workshop. While we have access to conventional machine tools and CNC milling in our own workshops, we decided on a cooperation with the SLUB and other partners for the small innovative machines. Because of this, the machines are available in the Makerspace, the geographically central location between our two buildings on campus, for use by large groups of users.

The maintenance of historical and art collections at TU Dresden is the responsibility of the Office for Academic Heritage. One of the decentralised collections is the collection of Industrial Design Engineering – a comparatively young, small and still unedited collection, which nevertheless has significance for researching the history of design, product development and material culture in the GDR.
