Tasks of TU Dresden’s Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections
Founded in 1979, the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections of TU Dresden is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. The Office occupies a superordinate, central position, playing a supervisory role for the university’s cultural monuments, which are part of the scientific, technical, and art collections. It supports and advises the heads of collections on the scientific investigation, assessment, registration, and relocation of historical artefacts. It is the responsibility of the Office to supervise the university art collections, as well as protect, preserve, maintain, and make use of the entire collection of cultural assets. Within the broad scope of the collections and cultural assets possessed by the university, the Office is tasked with erecting and maintaining the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions. In addition, it provides advice on the expansion of the collection, artistic and interior design and representation, the preservation of historical monuments as well as topics relating to the history of the university. TUD’s Office for Academic Heritage oversees the university’s public relations in the fields of museum activities and university history. The protection of the collections and the university art collection is regulated by the Regulation on the Preservation of the Scientific and Technical Collections, the Art Collections and the Cultural Monuments of TUD (Ordnung zur Bewahrung der naturwissenschaftlichen und technischen Sammlungen, des Kunstbesitzes und der Kulturdenkmale der TUD) on the basis of the Heritage Protection Law of the Free State of Saxony (Sächsisches Denkmalschutzgesetz). The Academic Heritage is supported by a Scientific Advisory Board.
