Physical Device Collection
With its 200 exhibits, the Physical Device Collection is one of the oldest collections belonging to the TU Dresden. It predominantly consists of historical measuring instruments and testing equipment from the period between 1880 to approximately 1965. Distinctive devices include a refractometer (ca. 1870), a mirror galvanometer (ca. 1920) and a high-precision meter with telescope. The collection was first mentioned in 1836, but much of the equipment can be traced back to August Toepler (1836-1912), Professor for Experimental Physics and Director of the Institute of Physics at the Technical College of Dresden between 1876 and 1900. Important pieces of the collection were damaged in 1945 when the main building at Bismarckplatz was destroyed.
