The institute
The Institute for Medical Informatics and Biometry (IMB) is part of the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine at the Technische Universität Dresden. Since 2010, Prof. Dr. Ingo Roeder is director of the institute. He holds the chair for Medical Statistic and Biometry. In 2018, a second professorship for Medical Informatics has been installed. This chair is held by Prof. Dr. Martin Sedlmayr. In addition to the training of students in the fields of medical biometry/ bioinformatics, epidemiology and medical informatics as well as the methodological support of research projects at the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Dresden, the IMB is actively engaged in various research projects within the fields of systems biology and systems medicine. That means, with the help of theoretical approaches and computational methods, the IMB runs and supports the planning, implementation, analysis, and interpretation of basic scientific and clinical research projects. Another research area of the IMB is medical informatics, with a focus on building an ecosystem for medical research and patient care using the integration and application of various technologies and mobile systems.

About us
The major research focus of the IMB is in the field of systems medicine, i.e. the development and application of theoretical and/or computational (mathematical/bioinformatical) methods that can be applied in the context of medically/clinically relevant questions. This focus is complemented by another one in the area of medical informatics, which included e.g. the establishment of a hospital data integration centre or the development and application of digital assistance systems. The research activities of the IMB can, therefore, be summaries by the following key words:
- Systems medicine / mathematical modelling (model building/computer simulation)
- Medical biometry, bioinformatics and machine learning (data analysis)
- Medical informatics (data integration, process and decision support)
Beyond the research activities, the IMB offers the following scientific services:
In the context of the planning, design and analysis of clinical trials, the IMB closely collaborates with the Coordination Centre for Clinical Trials (KKS) Dresden. Moreover, there is a tight link between the scientific activities of the IMB and the National Centre for Tumour Diseases (NCT) at the partner site Dresden, specifically in the area of data integration and model-based clinical research. Also, the IMB is closely linked with the Centre for Medical Informatics (ZMI) with the Dresden University Medicine.
