RESEARCH

The research of the institute is focused on the fields of cardiovascular and metabolic physiology, their interaction and related diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes.

With regard to cardiovascular research, the diverse functions of the vascular endothelium are at the center of our interest. As a continuous cellular lining of the vessels, the endothelium has multiple regulatory functions. In this context, we investigate regulatory mechanisms of vascular tone, cardio-vascular remodeling, endothelial barrier function and angiogenesis.

Our metabolic research focuses on the physiology of the endocrine pancreas, the islets of Langerhans, through which insulin secretion occurs. Of particular interest is the role of these cells in the regulation of blood glucose levels, and the development and therapy of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. This work is carried out in the framework of a research cooperation between our institute and the Paul Langerhans Institute Dresden.
