Study medicine as a regular course of study
Table of contents
Content and structure of the program
The course is based on the licensing regulations for doctors and is divided into three sections: In the first (pre-clinical) stage, students learn the basics of natural sciences and medicine. It lasts 4 semesters and concludes with the first section of the medical examination (Physikum). Admission requirements also include training in first aid and a three-month nursing internship. The second (clinical) study phase comprises 6 semesters (including four-month clinical traineeships) and concludes with the second section of the medical examination. The practical year is the final year of study. It covers the fields of surgery, internal medicine and general medicine or a clinical-practical elective subject. Medical studies are completed after 6 years and 3 months by passing the third section of the medical examination.

What can I do after graduation?
After successfully completing your medical studies, you will usually go on to train as a medical specialist. In any case, graduates have a wide range of opportunities to pursue their professional career in their own practice or as an employee, e.g. in clinics of various sponsors, in the public health service, in the supply, works or Medical Officer service, at universities and research institutions. Two career paths are presented in more detail in the following alumni portraits.
Female doctors with heart, brain and courage
Even as medical students, Marie Downar and Oxana Atmann questioned the status quo and dared to try something new. Together with the nationwide non-profit association "Medicine and Humanity", they organized the "Future: Medicine" symposium in Dresden. to the alumni portrait
Forensic medicine is different from television
Until secondary school, Katrin Metzler wanted to become a vet. Then her interest switched to human medicine. But before the now 32-year-old could become a doctor, she trained as a nurse. Today, she is one of the few female forensic doctors in Germany. to the alumni portrait
