Review: Workshop on sustainable handling of research data

Sustainable handling of research data is one of the current challenges of the scientific community. To further develop competencies in this regard, the members of the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry II invited an external speaker from NFDI4Chem, a consortium in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), for a workshop on "FAIR Research Data Management".

The workshop, held on September 27-28, 2023, focused on new standards as well as current and future demands for research data management in chemistry. In the interest of good scientific practice, the focus was on FAIR handling of research data (FAIR = findable accessible interoperable reusable). Participants from different working groups of the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry gained valuable knowledge on how to organize, archive and share data in order to optimize the research process and promote data reusability. The interactive event provided an opportunity for practical exercises, discussion and exchange of experiences, taking into account specific needs in chemistry. Accompanied by the Service Center Research Data of the TU Dresden, the information and procedures were put into the context of common processes of the faculty as well as the university.

Prof. Michael Ruck, head of the Inorganic Chemistry II group, expressed his satisfaction with the workshop: "The sustainable handling of research data is of crucial importance for the success of our scientific work. This workshop provided us with valuable insights and will undoubtedly help to further advance the respective processes at the faculty." Participants of the workshop were equally enthusiastic.

The workshop represents a valuable step towards FAIR research data management, with which the working group intends to contribute to processes already initiated at the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry. What was learned is to be implemented in future projects in close exchange with the Service Center Research Data and data competence is to be continuously improved.
