The Poincaré conjecture - a discrete perspective
With his proof of the Poincaré conjecture in 2002, the mathematician Perelman solved the only one of the seven millennium problems of the Clay Institute to date.
The lecture presents a new perspective on this famous theorem and makes his ideas accessible with simple concepts - a 3D printer and a rubber band suffice.
Johannes Carmesin is Professor of Discrete Structures and investigates a wide range of topics in discrete mathematics as well as topology & theoretical computer science.
In conversation with Andreas Thom, he explores the question of the extent to which Perelman's breakthrough can be exploited algorithmically and what possibilities it opens up for solving open problems in discrete mathematics and computer science.
