IT Services
The School of Science’s IT Competence and Service Centre opened in June 2012. The Centre’s aim is to bring together know-how and to develop joint strategies for further enhancing the IT structures and improving the IT services for the School and its faculties’ staff and students.
This will require a further intensification of the communication between the administrators and those in charge, i.e. the university administrative board committees, and strengthening the School’s decentralised structures.
The administrators on site continue to act as the first and most important contact persons for users, while overlapping problems are bundled by the IT coordinators and, where relevant, passed on to the ZIH or the University’s management. The Centre also closely collaborates with the School of Science’s CIO who, together with the IT Competence and Service Centre’s speaker, acts as the School’s representative in the TU Dresden’s CIO Committee.
The IT Competence and Service Centre is the first point of contact for any School of Science related IT matters for the TUD’s other faculties and central institutions.

CIO School of Science:
Representatives for the Extended IT Management Committee:
Due to manifold demands and requirements, the IT service for desktop PCs and user software at the School of Science is organized decentrally. The first contact persons are always the administrators of the chairs, institutes and departments, who are also responsible for the operating and the safety of the interlinked computer technology according to the luK regulations. More information can be found on the webpages of the departments:
- Department of Biology
- Department of Chemistry and Food Chemistry
- Department of Mathematics
- Department of Physics
- Department of Psychology
The IT coordinators of the departments will ask for mutual or procured help in case of more complex problems.
At the School of Science, all staff members and students can use several software products resulting from the conclusion of licence agreements.
Dreamspark (formerly MSDNAA)
The licence agreement allows the use of the latest operating systems, developer tools and further tools of Microsoft for research and teaching. In this context, staff members and students can use for free the software included in the contract (not MS Office!) on their private computers. If you are interested, please directly contact the responsible person at your department.
Origin
The School of Science takes part in the financing of the campus licence Origin and therefore realizes the unlimited use of the software on the computers at the school.
In addition, students have the possibilty to use for free the latest version of the software on their private computers for one year.
ChemOffice
The Department of Chemistry and Food Chemistry has signed a rent and maintenance contract for the use of the respectively latest ChemOffice package.
Its use is allowed to the chairs taking part in the financing of the software as well as to students of the department.
All departments run PC labs for teaching. The equipment and configuration therein meets all particular requirements. More information can be found on the webpages of the departments:
The School of Science wants to improve the service for its staff and students even more and is therefore oriented to the ITIL-regulations.
The IT members and administrators have access to the ticket system of the Service Desk of the ZIH and thus, can work on centrally reported problems on site and, on the other hand, they can directly forward decentral demands to the central contact persons.
The administrators and dp-coordinators of the departments, institutes and research groups of the School of Science have many years of experience in the fields of data networks, network services as well as hardware and software.
The aim of the IT Competence and Service Centre School of Science is to further develop knowledge and experience, even if the staffing situation is rather tense.
The following list shows some of our far-reaching experience in certain fields:
- software for the modelling of scientific questions
- free software alternatively to commercial programme packages
- search in/of particular databases
- Windows in network and central administration of the desktops
- effective administration of PC labs for teaching
- operating system Linux for servers and desktops
- server-virtualising
- hardware for networking and security: firewalls, access controlling systems, elektronic locking systems
