Abstract: Physical properties of many materials are determined by a complex interplay of behaviors on different scales. Often those materials, e.g. microheterogeneous materials, show new an effective properties. Understanding the interaction of scales and predicting those large-scale effective
properties is a long-standing topic in mathematics. In this talk I present (a personalized) review on methods and results on scale bridging, based on the analysis of variational multiscale models. We discuss examples from nonlinear elasticity, random heterogeneous materials, and discrete-to-continuum analysis (atomistic modeling).
