The Department of Physics’ Mission Statement for Teaching and Research

“With one another” and “For one another” are the keywords of the mission statement for teaching and research of the Department of Physics. It follows TU Dresden’s mission statement and, the guiding principle and quality targets for teaching. The teaching is embedded in an atmosphere of mutual trust between lecturers and students and is geared towards the academic success of students and the acquisition of expertise for the extraordinarily broad application field for physicists in today’s society. It is especially important for the teaching staff to impart general key qualifications, beyond the specific expertise in physics, in particular the ability to quickly grasp and analyse problems and to propose solutions. The students’ civic commitment is supported and encouraged by opportunities in science communication or in one of the numerous university groups, for which they can earn credit points in the module General Qualifications. Students, staff and professors shape a community through a constructive and open atmosphere in student commissions or course evaluations.

The research is integrated into worldwide cooperation and utilises direct partnerships with non-university science institutions and businesses. It is based on a sense of initiative, creative curiosity and a fascination with the fundamental questions of nature. It is aware of its significance and social responsibility. From an early stage, it supports student participation in research projects conducted by academic staff and professors and promotes scientific curiosity. Research and teaching are aimed at promoting intercultural competences and cosmopolitanism and provide a broad range of offers to the public to participate in their scientific discoveries.
