Welcome to Institute of Solid State and Materials Physics
Our institute works in the field of solid state and materials physics. One may not always be so aware of it, but materials play a key role in our society today. Moreover, in order to meet the challenges in, for example, the fields of climate change, energy generation, energy storage and information technology, new materials with optimized or even completely new properties must be developed or found.
This is the field in which we work, with a strong focus on basic research. Unconventional superconductors, new magnetic states and unusual topological phases are at the heard of our activities, whereby a broad spectrum of experimental methods is used and constantly being developed. In this way, we are able to investigate the structural and electronic properties of new materials in great detail across many length and energy scales, thus helping to clarify key questions in current solid-state and materials physics.
A very important factor in our work is the training and qualification of young people. Well-trained and committed young people in our field of work are important for the future of our society and are needed. Our teaching activities therefore introduce the next generation to modern solid state and materials physics. It ranges from basic lectures to various interesting lab courses and advanced subjects of recent research.
