Bringing together research and industry
Dagmar Möbius
Ha Doan has been working as a Business Development Manager at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Engineering of Adaptive Systems (EAS) Division, in Dresden since summer 2023. Many TUD alumni work there. More are always welcome.
The Fraunhofer Society in Dresden has close ties to TU Dresden, not least because its directors hold chairs at the university. “I didn't study at TU Dresden,” Ha Doan clarifies right from the start. She became involved with the alumni magazine through a former colleague who is a member of the TUD Alumni Network. Naturally, she is also interested in joining a network for professional reasons.
Ha Doan, who is originally from Vietnam, came to study Technical Business Management at TU Clausthal in Lower Saxony directly after graduating from high school in 2016. The university in the Harz Mountains offered a choice of engineering or business studies. “At the time, I thought business would be easier for me. But that was not the case,” she says with a smile. During her undergraduate and graduate studies, she completed internships at Volkswagen and worked as a student assistant to gain work experience. After graduating, Ha Doan worked for a pharmaceutical company, followed by five years at an IT company.
Know-how and research for practical applications
She came to the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden in July 2023 with very specific plans. “Here, I have access to expertise in artificial intelligence and semiconductors, and can become an expert in these fields myself.” The Business Development Manager builds partnerships with companies and works to communicate Fraunhofer IIS/EAS research findings to the outside world. Five to 15 projects are being conducted simultaneously in various fields of application, such as mobility, industrial automation, life and health, and microelectronics. One of them, for example, involves training robots to work together and meet specific requirements.
“Many TUD alumni work here.” They hold degrees in fields such as electrical engineering, production engineering, electrical engineering, or microsystems and mechatronics. They collaborate on many research and development projects with experts from TU Dresden. Graduates of TU Dresden are welcome to apply for the currently advertised positions, whether as engineers, research assistants or managers. Students can find jobs as research assistants or topics for their theses.
Openness is better than rejection
Ha Doan understands why many people are skeptical about artificial intelligence. “Since I started working at Fraunhofer, I've become increasingly familiar with AI. My hope is that people will be open to new technologies and not reject them out of hand. AI can be very useful for society, and that is why we need to engage with it.”
